This is a beginners’ Spanish class for kids who like to draw and sing. Activities will include creating comic books, dancing and singing, role-playing, and doing crafts. And, you will learn about the Mayas and their cryptic language. You don’t have to be an accomplished illustrator, or a rock star, or an anthropologist to take this class, because you will become all of those here! Vamos, anímate!  Taught by Cristina Gordy.

Ages 5 to 7
Every Thursday for 5 Sessions

Fee:  $150.00
Limit is 10 enrollments for this class.

This 5-part visual arts class for K-1 (Kindergarteners and First Graders) will guide children in the creation of a portfolio of multi-media pieces, as well as instruction in skills necessary for material explorations. We will begin by drawing the visible world, focusing on students’ personal translations of everyday plants, animals or machines.  Using these drawings as inspirations, we will make collages and use various wet media to convey colorful impressions and a basic understanding of lines and patterns.  As a facilitator of the students’ interests, I will use part of the last class to have a family art show of students’ favorites if desired.

Karen’s traditional art training began in words and images through
her involvement in poetry, printmaking and photography, publishing her
poems in independent presses and developing narration for short films
(most notably for Steve Okazaki). Creating collages in these media, she
studied Visual Arts at USCD and received her BFA in Filmmaking from SF
State with honors. She has shown her work at the Lummis House in
Highland Park, sold work privately and to the Jamie Canvas Gallery in
New York. Karen’s career in art education began in 1997 when she
founded the K-5 arts program for the Hidden Springs Community School in
Boise, Idaho. In Los Angeles, she implemented Reggio-Emelia influenced
art instruction in preschools and elementary schools, before she
coordinated and taught Trash for Teaching’s visual arts program in LAUSD
schools. Karen taught watercolor in Dale Chihuly’s Seniors Making Art and
continues with LACMA’s ongoing LAUSD Schools Outreach Program.
Karen holds an MA in Human Development with a Specialization in Art
Education from Pacific Oaks College, certificates from the Teaching Artist
Apprentice Program at Los Angeles Music Center and Echo Center’s
Parent Educator Program. She has led professional development seminars
in compassionate classroom practice, the creative process and play with
clay.
